Kalkan Town

Kalkan Town

Kalkan lies on the Lycian peninsula on the southwest tip of Turkey in a region commonly referred to as the “Turquoise Coast,” so named after the beautiful shades the sea takes along its shoreline. Kalkan is steeped in the history of its fishing village origins but today focuses on its exclusive reputation as Turkey's premier holiday resort.

'Quality not quantity' is an appropriate phrase to describe the haven that is Kalkan. Locals, and repeat visitors alike make no apology for discouraging mass package tourism, whilst strict planning regulations ensure that the allure and atmosphere of Kalkan is maintained.

The cobbled pedestrian centre delights the senses with its fishing village charm. Meander through the narrow streets, and browse bazaar stalls offering local goods and wares where you can barter for authentic souvenirs. Walk down to the harbour and watch the boats come and go from a sun-kissed waterside café.

Take your pick from the plethora of roof-top restaurants that are awash with culinary delights, content knowing that your meal will be accompanied by a beautiful Mediterranean backdrop.

Kalkan is also renowned for its abundance of Bougainvillea plants that adorn the town, and make it even more postcard perfect.

Beaches and water sports

Make use of the small beach adjacent to the harbour for local sea bathing, or travel just a few miles to experience the dramatic and beautiful Kapatus beach, a scene from paradise itself (accessible by both bus or water taxi). A little further out lies Patara beach which offers 18 km of beautiful sand covered shoreline.

Join a boat trip to explore the outlying islands, or for real indulgence, charter a gullet from the harbour in order to explore this incredible coastline. Drop anchor for lunch in your private bay, or take a dip in the turquoise waters.

For the more active, water sports such as jet-skiing, banana rides, water skiing, power boating and parasailing are available in the harbour or at the local beach clubs. Scuba diving is also a great way to explore these rich waters.

History and Geology

Kalkan, being part of Lycia, is an area surrounded by sites from antiquity and the modern world alike. Within an easy drive are many centres of interest, found on the around Kalkan link.

The Taurus mountains that rise steeply from the Mediterranean offer a fantastic and unique backdrop to the turquoise coast. This natural wonder contains a diversity of flora and fauna, and attractions are listed in the Around Kalkan link.
